1月5日 Things to comeThe next few months are going to be full of fun stuff.
The first weekend in March, of course, The Arnold Fitness Expo returns. I'm sure you're all sick of hearing me blog about it for the umpteenth year in a row but hey, its my blog. That can wait a bit, though.
Having somewhat backed off on my hatred for horror movie remakes last year, January 16th marks the opening of My Bloody Valentine 3D. The original, a Canadian film from 1981, is not really a great film. It has a devoted following but in my opinion its a little more well liked than it deserves to be. I've probably seen it five or six times and it never really grew on me as a favorite but a reason for that could be that the movie was heavily cut by the MPAA and to my knowledge there is no uncut version of the film in existence at this time. I would say if any old slasher film was ripe for a remake its this one.
Remaking this movie in 3D if freaking brilliant. I have not been to a 3D horror film in a theater since Friday the 13th part 3. I saw a few of the commercials and did my research and now I'm conviced this is going to be a really fun friday night date movie. From what I can tell it is another film that is continuing the welcome trend of returning to slasher film basics and it will be made even better by pick-axes and body parts flying at you in 3D. So I'm convinced, but a date usually requires at least a second person and Leslie is not sharing my excitement to see this movie. I'm going to need to come up with some really creative bribe in order to get her to go.
Here are a couple of advance reviews if you're interested.
12月31日 That's the way the old year passesOnly a few hours left to say goodbye to 2008. The year that went by in a blur. This will have to go down as about the most hectic year of my life. It's been a while since I've had time to write a blog. Christmas was great. We did our traditional get together Christmas Eve with Leslie's family and then we held our fourth annual Christmas breakfast at our house. We're getting better at it every year. Even with two kids running around on a Christmas morning high we got everything ready and cooked breakfast for 16 people with minimal chaos. We made belgian waffles with homemade strawberry sauce, shredded potato casserole, bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits, and a homemade pull apart pecan cinnamon loaf. Everything was awesome. We did a fantastic job if I do say so myself and everyone was stuffed. Noah got the one gift he really, really wanted. Spike the Ultra Dinosaur. It's like a two foot tall remote control dinosaur that can walk, sit up, fetch, laugh, roar, and a bunch of other stuff. For the last six months we've had to stop at the Spike display at Target and let him play with it every time we went. He also got a few Hot Wheels playsets, a bunch of games, and some Martian Matter which is like a little create-your-own-alien out of slime thingy. He loves that. He also requested a Chia Pet, which he got thanks to my brother. I should also mention that he really wanted Mighty Putty, Aqua Globes, Sham-Wow and anything else that has an informercial. The kid is a bit odd sometimes...he loves informercials. He can recite them to us word for word. Bethany got some nice clothes, a fairy playset, a green fuzzy purse, some My Little Ponys, and a few other things. Its not easy to buy for an 18 month old girl we discovered. I am sure that will change in time. Very, very sure. Tonight we are having a very small get together with just a few friends for New Year's Eve. We're making some snacks and appetizers and hopefully will just have a really nice relaxing evening watching all the kids play. Because 2008 was just so darn busy for me I ended up not using all of my vacation time so I'm carrying a week into the next year. That gives me seven full weeks of vacation to schedule sometime in 2009. I just hope I am able to put it to good use. I will write a blog again very soon containing my master-plan for 2009. Happy New Year! 12月16日 Sticking aroundOk, MSN Spaces. I'll stay, for now.
I've done a ton of blogging here over the last almost-four years so I will continue to do so. That's not so say I won't start up another one at a better featured and more user-friendly site and just start double posting because I have considered that. I still have my Myspace but the only things I blog about on there are related to MMA or my photography. I joined Facebook a few days ago and so far that seems pretty fun. I am still figuring it out and so far it doesn't look like anyone really uses it for blogging but it seems like a good way to keep in touch with friends...much better than myspace and I've already talked to some folks I haven't seen since high school. So, in conclusion.....I will blog here just like I always have, use Myspace every once in a while, and use Facebook, too.
12月11日 VentingDear MSN Spaces, what the heck is your problem?
I stuck with you even when most everyone moved over to Myspace. I stuck with you when those that did not go to Myspace went to Blogspot, Facebook or one of a dozen other places to share their thoughts with the world.
Despite my loyalty you see the need to mess with things every year or so and make it so that I can't figure out how to add a blog, photos, or leave comments for anyone. You change all my settings. You change everything. Why?
I've just about had it with you. 12月3日 Say Cheese part 2I added a few Christmas pics I did of the kids last weekend. Check em out.
I decided to share a few of those rather than some shots from the glamour shoot I did on 11/18. A little more family friendly, you know?
I used a two strobe set up...one soft box and one white umbrella for fill, set two stops below the main light. Just in case you were wondering. 11月17日 Say Cheese.I go long periods of time in between mentioning anything about my photography business on here. But I believe my first paid shoot was back in 1996 or 1997 so I've been doing it a long time. It has taken a back seat for several years now as the demands of my family and my regular job have taken up all of my time. I believe with the exception of one small album all the photos I post on here are just snapshots, most taken with a simple point and shoot camera. The majority of my portfolio consists of images shot (gasp!) on real film. And they're in a (another gasp) real leather photographers portfolio that you can touch rather than a virtual one. I have had two film scanners over the years and was unhappy with both of them so most of my work is not available to be seen anywhere unless I let you look at my portfolio. I have an archive of probably five thousand negatives from all of the shoots I've done. I have a glamour photo shoot scheduled for tomorrow night which is what got me thinking about this and why I decided to blog. Glamour and boudoir photography is my real passion behind the camera and what I feel most comfortable shooting. Tasteful Playboy style photography is a very competitive field and there are a lot of professional photographers out there doing it as well as some large chain studio like Glamour Shots. In years past I have run some specials around Valentines day when the demand is greatest and had some good success. If it's at all possible I want to do it again for 2009. Of course I still enjoy nature photography and family portraits as well. I am doing some Christmas pictures of the kids within a few weeks so I will definitely put those up for you all to see. From time to time on here, on Myspace and on a couple of other message boards people ask me photography questions or for advice. I love teaching photography and its one of the things I miss from when I worked for Cord Camera here in Columbus. I would love it when photography students from the local high schools would come in and ask me about dodging and burning or the characteristics of certain film stocks. This was prior to the digital revolution, however, so now I'm sure I'd feel like an old-school dinosaur trying to teach all of these things that can now be done with the touch of a button. I'm not so old fashioned and stubborn that I failed to realize digital is here to stay so I have made that transistion. I have to admit there are advantages. It is far lest costly for me to operate in the digital realm and it opens up a whole array of options for what I can offer a client. In case you are curious, here is the equipment I use. I have a Canon EOS KISS X, which is the Japanese version of the EOS 400D. I have always used Canon camera bodies and lenses so this was a natural choice for me. It accepts all of the EOS lenses I already own which was a plus because I have quite a lot invested in lenses, hoods, filters and all of that. I purchased the Japanese version from Broadway Photo in New York, where there are several giant photographic retailers. This saved me a few hundred dollars and all I had to do was convert a few settings to English and I was good to go. I have an Opteka Vertical grip with a double battery pack insert and a AA adapter. For studio lighting I use a monolight with a 24x24 softbox and a modeling light and an AC slave with a 30 inch white umbrella for main and fill and then a second slave as a background/hairlight. This is a basic three light portait set up but I change it all around depending upon what I'm shooting. I use an infrared transmitter on the camera hot shoe as a trigger or in tricky situations I'll run a PC flash cord to the main light. I sometimes use an on-camera Promaster flash with a Lumiquest softbox as a main light and an array of reflectors, diffusers, snoots, and grids. I have a Savage brand background stand with an 8 foot rise and a 12 foot crossbar. I currently use an Interfit flash meter which is actually very inexspensive but I've found it to be very accurate. I used Tiffen filters on my lenses but I may be adding a Cokin system to my arsenal. I use Bogen Manfrotto and Slik tripods. So that's my basic gear. Unfortunately it sees far too little use but I'm really hoping to change that and find a way to work more time for photography into my life. As my digital portfolio begins to increase I will probably start putting more stuff online. Eventually I hope to go ahead and put up a real website strictly for my photography and to get all of my old negatives scanned properly. Well now, if you're not into photography you probably nodded off to sleep at about paragraph two. But that's what I felt like blogging about today so I'll make it up to you another time. 11月6日 I don't do serious. In case you haven't noticed, I avoid heavy topics here on my blog.
Politics? You won't find anything here. It's not that I am not interested, because I am. In fact, I am very well informed and I am constantly reading and researching to find answers to my questions. I don't like to be ill-informed regarding anything so I probably spend way more time than necessary trying to fill my brain.
But I don't blog about it. I spend my day being serious. It's my job to be serious. I deal with abrasive personalities, mucho stress, deadlines, and one mini-crisis after another each and every day or so it seems. So when it comes time to blog, a little meaningless fluff is what I'm all about. I aim to entertain, and that's about it. If someone finds a little humor in what I write then my work is done. I can live with the fact I have not created world peace, racial harmony, or economic prosperity with my blog. But I did write a really amusing story about a mysterious stranger who kept taking big smelly dumps in the men's room of my former office a year or so ago. You see, I think it balances out.
I will say one thing, and one thing only. I think the right man won. I have always been a republican, but I voted for Obama and it felt very right. I am prouder to be an American right now than I have been in quite some time. But what the hell is up with California? You can elect a vowel-mangling former bodybuilder-actor from Austria as governor (a man who used to shave his entire body and prance around in posing trunks mind you) but you won't let gay people marry? No dig on Arnie here, because I love the guy, but come on. I guess too many mud slides and wildfires have just pissed everyone off.
Anyway, I'm back from my "vacation" , which consisted of watching a lot of movies and....well, pretty much watching a lot of movies. Here is a small sample of what I took in....
The Mummy's Hand. Seen it probably 5 times now. Great movie and the first one where we really get the version of the Mummy that we think of when we think of the classic Universal monster films. Most people forget this, but in the first one the Mummy is only in bandages for a few short scenes and he spends the rest of the film lurking about wearing a fez.
The Invisible Man. Awesome, awesome film. I'm talking about the original here, by the way. Claude Reigns was excellent. I've seen this probably 10 times or so.
House of Frankenstein. A decent entry from Universal, continuing the tie-in started with Frankenstein meets the Wolfman. The gypsy girl is very annoying though.
Alien vs Predator. I had not seen this yet. I liked it....I don't know why everyone hates is so much. There are some serious gaps in logic and even continuity between the two franchises that spawned this but overall it was entertaining.
Pumpkin Karver. Slightly better than average slasher flick. Good production values but the most annoying teens ever placed in such a film. You will want them to die painfully.
There are a bunch more thanks to AMC, TNT, FX and a few other channels who were in the Halloween spirit.
Speakin of Halloween, it was awesome! Beautiful weather, I wore shorts! I'll put some pictures of the kids in the new album soon.
10月27日 One Swine Day: The Return of Sean's Atomic weenies!Saturday was the annual pig roast. The weather was nice, the food was great and the place was packed. I made my famous atomic weenies but after hearing of a few complaints and near death experiences attributed to them last year I toned them down just a notch. They were not quite melt-your-face spicy this year but still had some heat. I took out the habanero component and reduced the crushed red pepper and cayenne. The general public seemed to love them as they dissapeared super fast, but I did have some hardcore fans that were dissapointed. Maybe next year I'll make both versions.
I didn't take too many pictures, but here's one I thought I would share. Costumes were encouraged so I went as my alter ego Sean Groovelicious, sleazy 70's disco/porn producer. Leslie was my Pirate Queen.
10月23日 Is That A Machete In Your Pocket Or Are You Just Happy To Slay Me?
Mr. Voorhees, how long have we known each other? Almost a half century I think. I believe I was about ten years old when we met, courtesy of late night HBO programming after my parents had gone to bed. Surely they would have freaked out had they known. The event could have been traumatizing for a normal child, and at the very least led to years of nightmares. But not me. No, I found myself awestruck as you scared the shit out of me. And so began a strange but enduring relationship. Strictly platonic of course, the kind of bond that can only form between a young man with a wild imagination and a homicidal maniac given to bouts of mass slaughter. A twisted bro-mance even. I have seen each of your movies, even when I felt compelled to avert my eyes....which unfortunately had more to do with the lameness of the particular entry than any actual fright. Even though I am a steadfast member of the camp (hee hee, a joke...camp, get it?) which believes Part IV: The Final Chapter should have been just that, I still recognize that a few of the latter films had some items of merit. Part 8 for instance, is almost universally loathed. But the first three quarters of the film are not half bad and a welcome return to the tried and true stalk and slash formula. You taught me much. It's fun to be scared. The more obnoxious the teenager, the quicker they die. A car will refuse to start at the worst possible moment. Any time a group of teens heads to the woods for some boozing and fun there will be at least one decapitation. These are all valuable life lessons. Which leads me to the point of this blog entry..... I am both worried and slightly optimistic regarding the new "re-imagined" Friday the 13th movie that will hit theaters in early 2009. I saw the movie trailer on the Scream Awards on Spike TV the other night and I honestly was impressed. The music was perfect, and the scene shown looked almost straight out of part 2 which was actually the first of the series that I viewed during that late night HBO incident. There are a billion sites and blogs dedicated to this film and I have surfed them only briefly, mostly because the people on there are a bunch of freaking boneheads who just have no clue....about anything, let alone these types of movies. From what I have gathered this film takes place possibly between part 3 and part 4 or around that time period which, to my sheer amazement, is exactly how I would have done it. Parts 1-4 are the "meat" of the series, if you will. Part 4 is a damn near perfect horror film and it ended so well there really was no coming back without an injection of stupid. Well as luck would have it stupid is found in abundance in Hollywood so that's how we got the rest of the bunch. In the new trailer, Jason looks good. He's still a big guy, but he looks more like the quick and lanky Jason of the early years than the 'roided out slab of beef he had become in the recent films. And he runs. Thank god, he can run again. No more leisurely strolls which somehow magically overtake a group of terrified victims running like jackrabbits on meth. The fact that Michael Bay is producing this movie has me a little perplexed but in the end I'm not sure it matters as long as the director was true at least in spirit to the source material. I can just see Bay leaning over to him going, "What you really need for this scene is a helicoptor explosion! Yeah, that and then some really cool slo-mo scenes of pilots getting into their planes against a bright orange sunrise. That would just rock!" There are some that are dealing out a great deal of hate already which I think is slightly immature considering no one has seen the actual film yet. It's sort of a knee-jerk reaction for the so-called purists out there. But, really, can it be worse than part 9? I think not, unless they made it a musical and cast Mylie Cyrus or something. Now, I will admit (and there's plenty of proof if you want to go through my archives) that I am not a fan of remakes. This is because most of them are completely unnecessary(hello, The Fog?). But I've been forced to eat my words more than once in the last few years because a few of them have turned out quite good. In fact some would argue they surpass the original. Black Christmas, for example. The Hills Have Eyes is another notable example. The new TCM has some good qualities as well. Sorry, thats geekspeak for Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and setting a date for my reunion with Mr. Jason Voorhees sometime in early 2009. Here's to hoping it doesn't suck donkey balls. In the meantime, I recommend everyone go out and rent some early Friday the 13th flicks if you don't already own them like a proper person should. Here's a tip from the expert. If you're a little short on time you can skip the first one. It's summed up in a recap in the beginning of part 2 anyway. Just watch part 2,3, and 4. Come on, that's like one Saturday night and a six pack of Corona. It's worth it. One last thing, because the boneheads I mentioned earlier never seem to be able to get it right on all those sites and message boards.... Jason got his mask in part 3, and that's also where the notch in the forehead came from courtesy of an axe at the end. In part 2, Jason wore a brown burlap type bag on his head. It was actually quite scary as well but made him look like the killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown. That one's based on a true story...check it out. Jason, as most people know, is not in the first movie until the last few seconds. He is not the killer in that one. Jason is also not the killer in part 5. Ok, now that I've cleared that up I think my work here is done. 10月13日 Squashing apples and putting out fires. As promised I put up some new pictures!
I did it at two seperate times so if you saw them you might want to look again because I added some more. They are from the last two weeks or so.
Our local fire deparment had an open house so we went and checked that out on the way to a family dinner at Leslie's uncles house. Noah had a blast, obviously. He got to use the fire hose and an extinguisher and climb out the window of a house filled with artificial smoke. He was a little trigger-happy when it came to the extinguisher and the first time around he jumped in and squeezed it before the poor firefighter, woefully unprepared for the likes of my son, could even open his mouth to give instructions. So once the huge white cloud cleared out he got to use it properly and put out a fire.
Last Friday night we went across the road to cousin Damon's and got out the apple press. We gathered several boxes of apples from the apple trees around the yard and washed them up then tossed them in to make our own cider. It made for some pretty cool pictures. I'm not a big fan of cider but this tasted pretty good. The kids loved it. Afterward, when everyone was pretty much covered in sticky apple bits and being eaten alive by bugs, we came in and ordered some pizzas.
Tonight Noah has one of his last soccer games of the season. I have not toted my camera along to any of the games this time around but I will tonight. My dad and grandma are going so he's excited about that. He tends to play a lot harder when he's got a bigger audience. Although last season when my friend Jon and his daughter Olivia came to watch Noah started showboating a bit much and ended up Judo flipping a kid on the other team. I'm serious; it was a legitimate hip toss. I was torn between been very impressed and being horrified. Hopefully nothing like that will happen tonight. Like I mentioned earlier, he is not nearly as into this season and I think he's looking forward to it being over. I'm not sure he's going to want to play again in the Spring.
After posting my last blog I went out and rented Joyride 2 but we have yet to watch it and its due tomorrow so it has to be tonight.
I was going to watch it last night but completely forgot about Charm School Rock of Love Girls on VH1. That was some high quality entertainment right there. That show could not be any better. If trashy reality TV with no morals or social value at all is your thing, this is the one show you can't miss. I even stuck around for the show on next which was the Pick Up Artist 2. I like that one as well but for the life of me I can't remember ever seeing any of the first season or even hearing about it. Its worth watching just to see two guys going by the names of Mystery and Matador. I asked Leslie if I could adopt a one word psuedonym that reflected my dynamic personality. She said no. Well, that's not exactly true. She said I could us Buttface but I chose to just leave things how they are. 10月8日 A couple items for your chopping listHello, everyone.
We did some fun stuff last weekend and I have some pics for a new album so I'll have it up in a day or so if not sooner.
In the meantime, since it is October, its the perfect time to go rent a good horror movie. Two movies came out this week on DVD that might be worth a look. I don't really have any inside info on them but both are sequels from pretty darn good movies so its possible they won't suck. It does happen, every once in a blue moon, that the sequel is superior to the original. Such was the case with Wrong Turn 2 which is the most recent example I can think of.
Anyway, I recommend giving Feast 2 and Joy Ride 2 a look. Feast is pure horror but if Joy Ride stays true to the spirit of the first one its more a suspense type movie. The first Joy Ride totally freaks my wife out so the way I look at it that's a good thing.
Start the popcorn and let the carnage begin! 10月2日 The weekend, already? The first weekend in October has nearly arrived, and there is definitely an Autumn chill in the air. Unfortunately cousin Damon, myself, cousin Nyle, and a handful of others have taken the boat out for the last time this year. But what a great season of wakeboarding. We'll always have those memories. Catching some big air over the glassy smooth waters, the wind blowing through our hair on the ski boat, the heat of the summer sun. Wait a minute, that wasn't me. I didn't get to go. Not a single time. But I'm sure they all had a blast. I never appreciate the fact that I can see Damons driveway from my back yard more than when I let the dogs out every Sunday morning and see them all pulling onto the road, boat in tow. Off to catch some wake while I.....oh, I don't know....mow the grass, clean the house, go grocery shopping, fix everything that Noah broke throughout the week, do some laundry, vacuum crackers and fruit snacks out of both vehicles, and a million other things. Oh, but I'm not bitter about it. On the bright side, I did not sustain any wakeboarding injuries this year and I have another eight months or so to train before next season. My ACL is just fine. Yeah, I'll just keep telling myself that's the bright side to missing out on all the fun. Now watch as I futher add to this artifical bright side I've created. This all kind of ties together the boat and wakeboarding thing. Although we've got several lakes around here, by far the best place to take the boat is down to massive Lake Cumberland in Kentucky where Leslie's aunt and uncle keep their houseboat. Everyone else made a few trips down for some long weekends but we, of couse, could not go because we had too much going on. So, Leslie's uncle Steve and aunt Cindy have not really seen much of Noah and Bethany for a few months since they spend a good deal of the summer at the boat. I don't blame them for that. I tell you, that is the life. Now that the season is all but over they are spending weekends in town and gave us a call to ask if they could babysit on Saturday night. Volunteering to babysit when there is no need? Who does this? I am lucky enough to be blessed with two great kids that people actually seem to like watching. Of course, we just couldn't refuse them. So we are going out to dinner with a few of our friends. Nothing fancy but I'm really looking forward to it and then the OSU game comes on at 8 so Saturday should be pretty great. But come Sunday, its back to wakeboard training. There is no doubt I'm going to be the most prepared wakeboarder with the least amount of actual water time in the entire country.
9月25日 My calendar is mocking me.The last week of October is just sitting there, staring at me. Being all....blank and stuff.
I will be done with work at about 1pm on Thursday, October 23rd and I don't have to go back until Monday, November 3rd. I had to take some time off, because I can only carry five days into the next year. My department has no available days in November or December, so October had to be it.
So now I have this chunk of time marked off for a "vacation" but I just can't figure out what to do with it. I know what you're thinking; its a month away, don't worry about it. Well I know myself well enough to know that if I don't have something in mind ahead of time, I will spend nearly all of my time off trying to find something to do with my time off and drive my poor wife so crazy that she is ready to kick me out of the house. This happens when I have even a single day off, let alone over a week.
I don't like taking time off just to relax. Relaxing is not very relaxing to me, which is how I ended up with so much extra time this year anyway. I don't schedule any vacation time unless we're actually going somewhere or doing something.
The worst part is that Leslie will not be off so I have to find something to occupy myself. She is off on Friday, the 24th and she still has every Thursday off so I guess that's something. That Friday will mostly be spent helping out getting things ready for the annual pig roast. Look back in my blog to the last weekend in October for the last three years or so to read more about that.
There are a few things in my favor. I love October, and Halloween is my favorite holiday. I've got to use that as a foundation and build on it.
I saw a commercial for a murder mystery train ride which really sparked my interest. We absolutely love murder mystery dinner theaters so this could be fun. I looked at the website and it looks like there is no meal inclusive to the show but that's not a big deal I guess. The train setting would be cool. Murder on the Orient Express immediately comes to mind. It's about an hour away and reasonably priced so that is a possibility. While looking that up I saw that there is also a wine train that tours the scenic Fall foliage of the Hocking Valley. Ok, they had me at wine.
I thought about trying to do a backyard horror movie marathon. I have access to a projector and I know you can rent giant inflatable screens. This sounds like a great idea until I started to work out the details. The fact that Bethany's window faces the back yard and that she goes to bed at or before 8pm really throws a wet blanket on that fire. Plus, October in Ohio is very unpredictable. It could be 80 degrees and sunny, or we could have a snow storm. Damon has on of those giant propane patio heaters so a little chill wouldn't be a problem but sleet and freezing rain might take some of the fun out of things.
I can't really take one of those home project vacations because Leslie will still be working and I have to be relatively quiet if I'm at home. Besides, I did one of those vacations last year; didn't have much fun.
So I am open to suggestions. Give me something to do. 9月22日 Welcome to my official re-launch partyHave you ever lost time? How about over eight months worth of time?
I don't know where this year has gone. I remember last Christmas and then everything until know seems like a big blur. I didn't mean to keep pushing my blog updates aside but it just happened. I keep thinking, "I'll do it tomorrow." It's amazing how many days it can take to get to tomorrow.
But here I am. I was going to celebrate with a big blog full of family photos, however that is a bit impossible at the moment. I was smart enough to begin backing up all of my photo archives on DVD last year case something happened. But just like my blog I haven't kept up with it this year so almost everything from 2008 now sits on a dead hard drive. I have made a couple attempts to retrieve the data with no success.
All my music, my entire itunes library, was also on that hard drive as well as our email address book, countless documents, and a whole bunch of stuff I probably just haven't thought of yet. But I'll get it back. I have ways of making it talk. I'll extract that information. I'll treat that little sucker like a mouthy Guantanamo Bay prisoner. It'll give up the goods.
If all else fails I can pay a data recovery company to do it but I'm trying to avoid that. There are a few more tricks I want to attempt first. Did you know that you can take a bad hard drive and place it in a freezer for a few hours and then, supposedly, you will have about forty minutes to get your files before it goes bad again? This is apparently not a myth but does, in fact, work. I haven't tried it yet but its next on my list.
You see, it went like this...
Our home computer is from 2003. It's a HP Pavillion a350n. This is a great computer and I was going to keep it until we purchased an Imac and left Windows behind for good. It's one of the first hyper-threading computers and its 2.8ghz chip, with the hyper-threading, is really on par with most of the dual core processors in the newest computers. It has a really nice graphics card with composite and s-video out, a built in memory card reader, two Firewire ports, and tons of USB 2.0 ports. Plus its built like a tank. It looks like some sort of giant futuristic toaster.
I added another gigabyte of memory last year. Then around Christmas time the original DVD writer drive died so I installed a Mad Dog multimedia drive which is awesome. A few weeks ago a power surge blew out the internal power supply (even though it was plugged into a surge protector). I couldn't find a reasonably priced power supply locally so I ordered one online. We survived about ten days with no computer but once the new one arrived I installed it and had us back up. About three days later the hard drive just died. I suspect the power surge had something to do with that as well but who knows.
So ordered a new hard drive and waited. Unfortunately our recovery discs for the computer were lost about the time we moved into the house so I had to obtain a new copy of Windows XP (because I hate, no, I loathe Vista) and once the new drive arrived it was like setting up a brand new computer. I have loaded all the drivers and set up a seperate user ID for myself, Leslie, and now Noah (who is very computer savvy for a five year old),
And here we are.
We weren't truly cut off from the internet of course because we now each have home offices in the house with our company computers but its not the same. I'll talk more about working from home in a bit.
We just had a hurricane in Ohio. No joke. I've never experienced such a thing. We've had high winds with storms before and of course there are always tornados around but this was totally different. It was a beautiful day, just a little breezy. Then it got blustery. A few hours later it was mass chaos and now, nearly a week later, its still not over.
Apparently Hurricane Ike hit Texas and then made a b-line straight for Ohio and Michigan. We had sustained winds of almost 60mph and gusts over 75. It ripped the crap out of everything, leaving hundreds of thousands of people around here with no electricity and massive damage. Trees were falling, roofing shingles were whizzing through the air like ninja weapons, and live electric wires were flapping around everywhere looking to zap someone. There is a really nice house that a young family built on a once heavily wooded piece of land that is directly across from our back yard, on the other side of the main road. Their outdoor shed got completely blown off its concrete foundation.
It was just wind. No rain, no thunder, no hail. Just really nasty, hot wind. You would think that wind blowing that hard would have some sort of cooling effect but not even close. As I was outside trying to secure everything that was about to take flight I was sweating like a hog. I felt like I was being blasted by a dryer exhaust vent.
I saw the siding from one side of our neighbors house get peeled off and blown away like it was attached with paperclips or something. Our lone casualty was our gorgeous weeping cherry tree...snapped in half like a twig. By some miracle, we did not lose electricity. We were the only subdision anywhere near us that had power by the end of the night. As of right now, there are still thousands with no power. At soccer practice a few nights ago several parents said they have had no electricity since the storm on Sunday.
Things are slowly getting back to normal around here, but that was a heck of a way to end the summer. At least it made it memorable because it was gone in the blink of an eye and we did absolutely nothing. No trips to the houseboat, no amusement parks, no vacations. I worked enormous amounts of overtime so really the only sunshine I saw was that which came through the window of my basement office. I took Noah fishing once at my uncles pond and decided to wear a tank top on a blazing hot day. That had a painful and very funny looking ending. That was a couple months ago and I still have a permanent pasty tank top on when I take off my shirt.
We made it to the Ohio State Fair which was a lot of fun for Noah but nothing out of the ordinary happened this year to remark about. I couldn't even find a good candidate for my annual creepy carnie award. It's like they gave them makeovers or something; most of them actually resembled members of the human race this year. I was totally bummed that the Nitro Ice Cream stand was missing from the fair this time. Wonder what happened.
Leslie and I did get to go see a Poison concert in July which totally rocked. It was Poison, Dokken, and Sebastian Bach. It felt like 1987 again, except for all the little kids in the crowd. I don't get that...there were ten year olds mingling with half naked chicks in hooker outfits. In front of us there was a mother-daughter pair and directly in front of them was a pair of hot blonde girls who kept making out with each other during the show. Great entertainment for me but I just wonder how that was explained to the daughter.
Honestly that was the best concert I've been to in years. Everyone sounded great, especially Dokken (although Don Dokken has not aged well and looks almost comical trying to do the rock star thing), and the boys in Poison really know how to put on a show. There was fire, explosions, fog machines, giant sparklers and everything else that made this kind of music great. I would totally catch them again the next time they play.
Noah started kindergarten at the end of August and loves it. He is excited to go every day and loves riding the bus. He is also in his second season of soccer which keeps us very busy but I have to say he doesn't really seem as into it this time around. At the last practice he stopped practicing and started looking for four leaf clovers in the middle of the field. He has expressed interest in both gymnastics and karate so we might look into those once this season is over. There is a really nice mixed martial arts gym pretty close to here that I wouldn't mind looking at myself. They have kids classes plus offer Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, and Krav Maga for adults along with some cardio kickboxing which I think Leslie might enjoy.
Bethany is walking now. She has about eight teeth and is finally growing some hair. I will get some recent pictures up soon. She is one hundred percent daddy's little princess.
Working at home is going great. The adjustment period was longer than I had figured and for a couple weeks I was really unsure if I was going to love it like I thought I would. At first I missed the office environment and interactions but that quickly faded and I'm now happy just rolling out of bed, putting on my slippers and getting to work.
This is a good time to re-fire the old blog because its almost October and we all know that's my favorite time of year. Halloween, the grandest of all holidays, is right around the corner. We have the Circleville Pumpkin show, the annual pig roast, the trip to the pumpkin patch and all sort of other things coming up. I am off work the last eight days of October so I want to cram as much Halloween hoopla in as I can.
There simply has to be time to cram in a horror movie marathon.
I can't avoid the topic any longer....no Vegas this year. No vacation of any kind, much like 2007. At the beginning of the year I said something along the line of needing to take twice as many vacations in 2008 to make up for the lack of such vacations the previous year. Well, let's just say that in 2009 we have to pack in three years worth. I could happen, because I am not going to be able to use all of my time off this year and get to roll over an extra week on top of the extra week I was granted for ten years of service. So the time will be there, technically. Hopefully as we get into next year, prices will come down or at least stabilize a little bit. I stopped even looking a while ago but Vegas packages had gone up like 40 percent from the beginning of the year until around May.
Returning to Disney around Christmas 2009 is something I've been thinking about. Great time to go and both kids would be able to enjoy it. It's just a thought right now.
More later. And I'll get some pictures up, even if I haven't been able to recover the ones on the dead hard drive. 7月8日 ChangesLong time no blog.
Ok, first some back story....
The last few months at work have been some of the most stressful, diffecult months since I started with the company ten years ago. I've been putting in so much overtime I basically had no energy to write a blog entry. I was also spending about a hundred bucks a week in gas just for my truck driving back and forth to the office. But that was then.
I don't go to the office anymore. My office is downstairs. I am now officially a work-at-home employee. Last week the final approval came through and I was able to take my computer with me when I left. It felt very weird working that last day at the office. But damn did I need this.
But I wont be home alone for long. Within two weeks Leslie will be doing the same thing. She got approval to move to home as well. Her office will be in our den.
So, basically, what I'm trying to say is that we'll pretty much never have to leave the house. I no longer need to shower, dress myself, shave, or any of that stuff. I can grow a long Grizzly Adams beard and wear the same pair of Spongebob Squarepants boxers every single day.
Ok so maybe that's taking it too far but you get the point. Not only will we save 400-500 bucks a month on gas but we will now get tax breaks for our home offices, electricty and all of that.
We have changed babysitters, out of necessity. Noah will be starting kindergarten soon and we had to find a sitter close by that is on the busline. This was way more traumatic for Leslie and I than we ever imagined. Our sitter, Carol, was like family and we'ver used her since Noah was only a few months old. We are still getting used to the new sitter but Noah seems to love it there. I can be there and back in less than 15 minutes.
Bethany turned one a few weeks ago. Can you believe it? I certainly can't. We had a huge party. Yes, yes I have pictures. I'll get an album up asap.
Regular blogging can now resume! Oh how I've missed you all. 6月19日 Have I kept you waiting long enough?Wow, I guess I better have a heck of a blog entry on the way to make up for two and a half months.... 4月1日 Pain in the buttThis is a little embarrassing.
Remember all that talk of getting a mountain bike? Well, I got one yesterday and went out riding with Noah last night. It was the first time I had been on a bike for longer than I can remember. We were only out for about a half hour, just around the neighborhood a few times. But today I can barely sit down.
I swear I do not remember bicycle seats being that hard. My rear end hasn’t taken a spanking like that since my bachelor party, but that’s another story. I was delighted to learn that they make super squishy gel seat covers. I’m adding that to my shopping list. It might detract from my tough guy image, but I’ll deal with it to save my buttocks from any more abuse.
I did not go with an expensive bike, which may explain the less than luxury seat. I went with that American icon of cycling, the Huffy. At least you’ve heard of it, right? I got the Huffy Alpine mountain bike and overall I’d say I’m very happy. It’s fairly heavy but I wanted a steel frame anyway rather than lightweight aluminum. I can just see myself coming down a hill a little too fast and folding an aluminum bike over like a big Pepsi can.
Noah only crashed his bike right into me once, so that went better than expected although I did have to warn him several times not to slam on his brakes when I’m riding right behind him. He almost got a twenty six inch knobby tire right up his back.
Leslie’s bike is next on the list, followed by a trailer for Bethany. Yes, that’s right, we’ll be THAT family. But I swear I will not outfit us in matching spandex and helmets.
Well, Noah’s fifth birthday has come and gone. I know every parent says this, but I just can’t believe he’s five now. We did not go with the traditional birthday party this year and in hindsight I regret it a little bit. I think he was a little disappointed about that even though he got to do a ton of other fun things.
The Friday before his birthday we all went to Genji Japanese Steakhouse for dinner. It was all family and there were twelve of us which is the most they could fit at a table. We requested Chef Tommy whom I had seen there before and had heard awesome things about. That was a brilliant idea because he was amazing. If you’ve been to a Japanese Steakhouse you know half of the experience is the performance and having a great chef can make all the difference. He had us all cracking up the entire night. He was great with Noah, too. At one point he made a giant heart out of mountain of fried rice and then with a few quick adjustments turned it into a giant butt. He stuck his spatula under one cheek and starting making it thump while he sang a very Asian version of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s I Like Big Butts song. Then he asked Noah if he had ever seen that before and he replied yes so he said, “What, your daddy no close door?” Okay, it’s probably one of those things you had to be there for to truly appreciate but he was very funny.
Saturday we drove across town and picked up Noah’s best friend Hayden and took them to see Horton Hears a Hoo. The movie was OK. Not great, but it held their attention. Then we took them back to our house to play for a while before taking Hayden home.
All this and we haven’t even come to his actual birthday yet.
Sunday was Easter which meant, like every holiday, birthday, special occasion or even not so special occasion, getting together with Leslie’s family for insane amounts of delicious food. There was a massive egg hunt. Massive as in the amount of eggs. However, Noah was the only participant. Leslie’s cousins seriously need to start having kids. They’re falling way behind. Bethany got to debut her Easter dress and she looked every bit the little princess. We brought Noah’s birthday cake to Easter dinner. Maybe it’s just me but I found a good deal of humor in celebrating a holy holiday with a bright red and blue Transformers cake with a plastic Optimus Prime on top. Could Jesus turn himself into a truck? I think not.
The Monday after was his actual birthday. Leslie and I both took the day of work to spend with him. The first stop was a little shopping so he could use some of the gift cards he had been given. This meant more Transformers, of course.
Then we went to Magic Mountain which is sort of like a big arcade, indoor gym, miniature golf, go-cart place. He absolutely loved that and we spent about three hours there. They had some bumper cars and we rode them twice. There was a sign posted that said no loose items allowed but the second time I really wanted to get a good picture of him. I did, and I posted it below. What you don’t see is what happened next. He came right at me and me and hit me so hard I dropped the camera. It hit the bumper car and the batteries came tumbling out onto the floor. I glanced over at the ride operator and she was staring at me like I was the world’s biggest idiot. But at least I got the shot. I recovered the batteries and was happy to find everything still worked.
I’ve got more but that’s it for today. I’ll update soon.
3月17日 Monday leftovers.Happy St. Patrick’s Day. It’s not really a holiday I go all out for but I am wearing a green shirt and I promised Noah a Shamrock Shake.
We bought Noah a new bike for his birthday which is still a week away but I couldn’t wait (I’m horrible that way) so we went ahead and let him have it. We’ve been going around the neighborhood with me walking beside him but I’ve decided that it would be fun to ride bikes together so I’m looking to buy a bike, which I know very little about. I’ve never owned a bike as an adult. My very first bike, when I was about Noah’s age, had a banana seat which would get ridiculed in any neighborhood in America. I upgraded to a BMX type bike and rode it until I was about twelve but after that I was done. I never owned a mountain bike or even a 10 speed.
I’m looking at mountain bikes at a few different places and I’m a little lost. There are bikes that cost 80 bucks and bikes that cost 500 bucks. They look about the same so I’m trying to figure out what exactly I should be looking for. Basically, I want a bike so I can take rides with my son around the neighborhood and possibly on some bike trails in a park. I have no Tour de France aspirations whatsoever so I would say my needs are pretty basic. As long as it moves from A to B and doesn’t have a seat that smacks the jewels around like dice in a Yahtzee cup that’s good enough for me. It’s hard to find good advice, though. I have a feeling that bike shops would be staffed with bike snobs who would try to convince me that I need to spend at least a grand to get a bicycle even worthy of sitting on. And the kid at the department store was probably stuffing burritos at Taco Bell until he got fired the week before so it’s not like he’d be much help. I’m sure I’ll figure it out soon. If gas gets any more expensive I might be riding that sucker to work.
We have enrolled Noah in soccer and practices should start this week. We got a call from his coach yesterday and his first game will be on the fifth of April. His team is the Mighty Ducks. Leslie is taking him out today to get his shoes, shin guards, and a size 3 soccer ball. His first sport; I’m so excited! I told Leslie she is officially a soccer mom now, complete with the SUV. I just hope he has a better experience with it than I did. I played two years of soccer when I was about 8 years old and we never won a game. We brought stink to a while new level. We were so terrible that the first year our team was the Astros and the next year we changed it to The Wolves. I don’t know whether it was because wolves sounded a little fiercer or because we were hoping the other teams wouldn’t realize we were the same team they pulverized the year before. I’ll never forget this one kid named Nick. He was the coach’s son, and every time a ball hit him or he fell down he would scream and writhe around in pain on the ground for about ten minutes. This happened four or five times each game and even more often in practice. I’m not sure if it’s the same now but back then every time there was an injury on the field everyone had to stop and take a seat. So half of our game time was spent sitting on the grass watching his wimpy ass flop around like a wounded fish.
If you’ll look back on my blog to last summer I wrote several entries about my quest to become proficient at wakeboarding by the end of 2008. Well, it’s not long until it will be warm enough to take the boat out and I’m not quite ready physically. I’ve still got some weight to lose. I think the first big wakeboarding adventure will be Memorial Day weekend at Cumberland so between now and then I’ll try to double my efforts.
Lake Cumberland, unfortunately, is still just a shadow of its former self. The water level is down about 40 feet while the Army Corps of Engineers makes repairs to the dam. The shoreline looks a lot different now and many of the secluded coves and fingers are not there. It’s still one of the largest lakes in the country, but I can’t wait until they raise the water back up again 3月15日 Happy MarchHello out there in blog land! Check out the new album.
Well we survived the blizzard of 2008. Twenty inches of snow in less than 48 hours, right on top of Columbus plus 35 to 40 mile an hour winds. Do you think I picked a good time to trade in the Miata on an Expedition? I'd say so. I love the Expedtion. It kicked major ass during the snowstorm. I was loving it. I was actually looking for an excuse to go out. There were only two kinds of people out in that madness...those that were stuck and those that were driving full size SUVs. Even the smaller SUVS were getting stuck in drifts. I ran right over everything. I could not get that monster stuck if I tried. I had not one single problem. It was awesome; I was actually having a blast. I even ran to the grocery store to get some fresh rolls for dinner during a Level 2 snow emergency just for the fun of it. The five hours total time it took to shovel the driveway was not so much fun.
In other news...
Bethany has a tooth! Noah was really late getting his so were shocked that she has one already. She needs it because that little girl can eat! She loves food...all of it.
Noah will be turning 5 in a little over a week. I can't believe it. Last week we went for his kindergarten orientation. This school is unbelievable. It only houses kindergarten and first grade and it is darn near the size of a small high school. There will be 20 kindergarten classes this year. No joke. As we found out, we live in the fastest growing school district in the state of Ohio. The building is brand new and has all the bells and whistles. The lunch room/ auditorium and library have giant plasma screen TVs on the walls. When I went to school, you were lucky to find a room with a working pencil sharpener!
His first week of school coinsides with my birthday which is the week I have been planning on going to Vegas so that is going to get bumped up I think. I hope.
Next Friday we're going to Genji Japanese Steakhouse for dinner at Noah's request. I know that I've blogged about Genji several times and I'm sure I've even got some pictures up here somewhere. Can't wait!
I've got a lot more but no time at the moment. I'll be back soon! And I swear I'll make it around to all of your blogs. Thanks for being patient with me. Oh...and someone tell NJaney to stop moving her blog because I'm tired of updating links! 2月19日 If you're going to do it, do it big!I no longer own my Miata. I have mixed feelings about that. I loved that car. After selling my Nissan Z I thought there would be no way that the less powerful Mazda Miata could replace it. I was wrong, however, and I learned that the little roadster was a darn fine sports car with perfect handling and ideal balance. What it lacked in brute horsepower could easily be beefed up by some modifications (which meant a supercharger).
As fun as it was, I realized that it sat in the garage five days a week minimum. Obviously, I couldn’t take the kids anywhere in it. If you think about it, Leslie and I could not even take it out for an evening because in order to do that we’d have to find a sitter and drop the kids off. Unless we took two cars to the sitter or made multiple trips there was just no way to work it.
So, basically, it got me to work and back on those days where there was no snow and ice on the road. I didn’t drive it otherwise, because once it hit a patch of ice it just became a hockey puck. I was not even able to drive it in the rain because the rear window had ripped loose from the convertible top and I had yet to get it replaced because I was debating whether or not to attempt it myself.
I completely replaced brakes, rotors, and calipers a few months ago. Not excessively expensive but not cheap either and certainly time consuming. The convertible top was going to be a major cost either in time, money or both. The exhaust system needed replaced. The one I wanted was ridiculously pricey and completely unnecessary unless I was going to add the supercharger I mentioned above. Last week the clutch started to go out. These are all standard things that need done from time to time on any car and not a reflection of how the car ran because mechanically it was really strong. Still, this stuff was adding up.
What I am going to say next will shock those of you that know me well. Brace yourselves.
I traded it on a Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition.
Not only do I have a history of bashing domestic automobiles, but also SUVs, people who drive them, and anything with an automatic transmission. I guess I have some explaining to do. Not only did I buy a domestic SUV, but I bought one of the most gargantuan tanks of an SUV there is. Eight passengers, baby. Plus all of their luggage.
I admit that over the last year or so the idea of a larger vehicle began to appeal to me. Having two kids would do that do anyone I suppose. Our Accord is a fairly large car and although we all fit there really isn’t any extra room for more passengers or too much stuff so just getting another car wouldn’t help us all that much. Plus, any time we needed to haul something or bought a large item we had to borrow a vehicle from someone or get help. And then there’s the issue of needing something that was capable of towing the ski/wakeboard boat which exists only in my imagination at this time. My choices were an SUV or a mini-van.
I wasn’t actively looking for a new vehicle but just out of curiosity one day I looked at the website for a Ford dealership where our friend works as a mechanic and there it was. I was intrigued but still only mildly interested when we called him and had him check it out and report back. It was a used one but an Eddie Bower Edition with every single available option, leather package, and a 5.4 liter Triton V8 engine. The website said that this Expedition was a 10 out of 10. The report we got from our friend pretty much backed that up so we decided to go look at it. Just look, you know. Couldn’t hurt.
The rest is history. It’s awesome. Huge, but awesome. When I say every option, I mean it. It’s got a tow package, power moon roof, memory seats, dual climate control, premium seven speaker stereo with a subwoofer and an Alpine CD changer, and every other bell and whistle. Did I mention its huge? It dwarfs regular sized SUVs. It’s the dream vehicle for a road trip, I’ll say that. Before we went through with it we had our friend put it up on a rack and thoroughly inspect everything top to bottom, in and out. As much as I know about import cars and engines I admit I am clueless about Ford engines. That was clearly evident when I asked our friend if the timing belt had been replaced and he informed me with a chuckle that it does not have a timing belt. Ok…ummm…whatever. I guess I’ll be buying a Haynes manual pronto.
We got it for a price that was unbelievable, and I also got nearly twice as much out of my Miata as I expected. There was no way I could pass up the deal. It sat in our driveway for three days before I was able to make enough room to fit it into our garage. It takes up a little more space than the convertible. In fact, if I took out the third row of seats and laid the second row down I think I could possibly park the Miata in the back of it.
Gas mileage? Don’t want to talk about it. Besides, going to the gas station is fun, right? Come on, the thing weighs 7200 pounds….its not exactly an economy car. Unfortunately I did not remember to take a picture right after I got it when it was all shiny and freshly detailed from the dealership. It's been running around in snow, sleet, and road salt for a few days. 1月31日 Ah, the smell of protein powder and sweat! The time is upon us again. Only a month away from the Fitness Expo. I no longer even know what to call it. The Arnold Classic, Arnold Classic Weekend, The Arnold Sports Festival….it has so many names now. I just call it the Fitness Expo and everyone (at least around Buckeye City) seems to know what I mean. Mr. Schwarzennegger has hosted his event here for the last two decades so it’s a part of our lives. Continuing the tradition started just last year, the Expo is again partnering with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and UFC 82 will be broadcast live on pay per view Saturday March first from our very own Nationwide Arena. Last year’s even set a record for the largest crowd ever for a mixed martial arts even held in North America.
Last year a little procrastination on my part allowed the UFC to be sold out before I could get tickets. This year I have a different problem. The seats I really want are about four hundred dollars each. I would pay it without hesitation however I need to buy two and my companion is not quite the huge fan I am. Leslie, bless her, really tries to get into it and enjoys watching mixed martial arts from time to time as a casual fan. She knows some of the fighters and I have tried to educate her on the names of various submissions, strikes, and grappling maneuevers. I’m not sure if its sinking in but when I tell her to watch for a Kimura she nods at me like she knows what I’m talking about. Still, I don’t see her getting anywhere near four Benjamins worth of enjoyment out of it.
I could pay for the cheap seats which are only about fifty bucks each but then I have to stop and ask myself its really worth dealing with the crowd and a terrible view when I could just watch it on pay per view at home and see everything, or just down the road at BW3 on the big screen.
I’m not entirely decided yet but I don’t think going to the live event is likely. I’ve got some other things in mind, though. Joe Rogan, whom most people probably know as the host of the show Fear Factor, is a commentator for the UFC as well as being a stand up comedian and he’s playing the Columbus Funny Bone the weekend of the expo (with the exception of Saturday when he’ll be broadcasting from UFC 82). Joe is the real deal. He’s been with the UFC for a long time and he knows his stuff. I’ve also heard that his standup routine is hysterical. I see Leslie enjoying that a lot more and there should be a good crowd of folks from the expo at the show I would think. Plus, the Funny Bone makes this drink called a Rubber Chicken which I know she likes….a lot.
If we hit the expo all day Friday February 29 and then went home and rested up then got a sitter for the night we could do dinner and the comedy club and call it a night. Sounds like a good plan to me. Everyone wins 1月28日 Bumps in the road.I’m just going to come right out and say what’s on my mind. 2008 is bringing suck to a whole new level so far.
By now most of you have been reading my blog for years. You know I’m not a whiner or a complainer. It takes a lot for me to start throwing out sour grapes. But I have to tell you, I’ve reached my limit. The fact that we’ve all been sick for weeks now is not what did it. I can’t seem to shake this chest cold but I’m Ok with that. It will eventually go away and I’ll be able to do normal things like eat and climb stairs again.
The fact that my computer was attacked by the mother of all viruses and I had to completely wipe the hard drive clean and start over is not what did it. Sure, I lost tons of programs and spent hours trying to reinstall drivers and files to get it back to working condition but that’s no big deal in the grand scheme of things.
The Monte Carlo caught on fire. That’s what put me over the edge. My beloved hotel, my home away from home right on the Las Vegas strip. I turned on the news, and there it was in flames. Of all the freakin’ hotels in the world, it had to be the Monte Carlo. Unfair. So unfair.
I know they got the flames put out and I know its not anywhere near a total loss but still its blemished, and I have no idea how long repairs will take. Of course I immediately went to the website and clicked on the ‘What’s New” button. Nothing there. I guess I really didn’t expect it to say, “Hey, we’re on fire!” but I thought there would be something. The room booking system however was down due to technical difficulties. I guess the fact that the room you wanted was now a charred, ashy hull is probably a technical difficulty.
They have until August to get it fixed. Things happen quickly in Vegas so I have confidence. If not, I might have to consider another hotel for my birthday festivities. There’s always the MGM, Treasure Island and any number of other great places. It’s just that no matter where else I stay, I always go back to the Monte Carlo as my first choice.
In fact the only thing good about 2008 so far is this economic stimulus package we keep hearing about. Or, as I like to call it, “President Bush Wants Me To Go To Las Vegas.” He’s giving me money, and he wants me to spend it. He said so. Yes, sir, Mr. President. I know just the place.
1月19日 It's alive....ALIVE!My computer has risen from the ashes. I am back online! I'll provide details in my next entry....coming soon. 1月4日 And we're off! We’ll soon be a week into 2008 and still need about three more months to finish out 2007. I’m a little behind. My poor blog has seen little attention lately, and it seems like I’ve lost touch with some of my blog friends. I’ll rectify that right away, I promise. I hope none of you have felt neglected. Remember, its not you…its me. Resolutions for 2008? I haven’t really thought about it. I’m not a big believer in New Years resolutions because for most people I’m sure history would show that they tend to fizzle out pretty quickly. I’m all about setting goals and making change but as far as actually launching a gameplan on the first day of the year I’m not really into it. Sure it makes progress easy to track but I’d rather start when I’m good and ready. Back around last September I already wrote about one goal for 2008 which was to become a competent wakeboarder. This was sort of an all inclusive goal because it would require me to get back into excellent shape and drop some of this extra weight my wife put on me by getting pregnant. I pretty easily dropped a total of around 25 pounds only to have December hand 10 of it right back to me. Not my fault. Cadbury candy covered chocolate holiday eggs need to be banned because they obviously contain some sort of addictive chemical. And then Wendy’s had to go and bring back the Double Cheddar Jalapeno melt for December. The pinnacle of man’s burger making technology. So I’m not exactly back where I started from but I have to get back to business. Only a few months until its warm enough to hit the water. Speaking of which, I read recently that when you wipe out wakeboarding your body can slam into the water with 3000 pounds of force. That’s a lot . The last time I did anything with 3000 pounds of force was after a buddy bet me I couldn’t eat 25 WhiteCastles. That wasn’t much fun. The list of things I want to accomplish in 2008 is actually just as long as 2007 or any other year. Whether I will get to them or not is the real question. Normally it comes down to a matter of time rather than motivation or any other factor. Maybe my real resolution for the new year should have been to stop overestimating what I can get done. This weekend Leslie’s parents are moving into a house they rented while they continue to try to sell their house in Vero Beach. The new house is less than five minutes from us. The brings huge babysitting possibilities. Not that we would ever abuse that, but it would be nice to go out for a nice dinner every now and then by ourselves. There is this rather obscure holiday coming up that happens on February 14 every year Sean's official guide to life |
